USA: Philip Doyle Manufacturing, a Canadian manufacturer of heavy duty air conditioning systems, has selected Honeywell Solstice N15 (R515B) refrigerant.
Philip Doyle, founded in 1966 and headquartered in Ontario, is a manufacturer of cabins, control room cabinets and industrial air conditioners.
Solstice N15 is designed as a low GWP refrigerant to replace R134a and R124 in chillers and heat pumps. It is a non-flammable A1 refrigerant blend with a GWP of only 293 according to AR4. It is a mixture of R1234ze (91.1%) and R227ea (8.9%) and is said to have zero slip and low discharge temperature with an efficiency comparable to R134a.
Philip Doyle reportedly selected the refrigerant to comply with global HFC phase-out regulations and stringent customer requirements, including in enclosed crane cabs. These heavy equipment operators work in scorching temperatures in enclosed crane cabs and need small climate control systems to keep them cool.
“Our customer was looking for a safe refrigerant suitable for crane cabin temperatures that can rise to 90ºC while minimizing the environmental impact,” said Basil Mendonca, Project Manager at Philip Doyle Manufacturing.
Honeywell Vice President and General Manager Chris LaPietra said, “Solstice N15 has been specifically designed and brought to market by component suppliers to provide chiller and heat pump manufacturers with a long-term solution that can meet any installation requirement.” Fixed refrigerant.
As a non-flammable replacement for R-134a, Solstice N15 is said to be ready for immediate use by chiller and heat pump manufacturers where safety and building codes limit the use of A2L and A3 refrigerants. Honeywell says the product design, similar to R1234ze, will provide OEMs with a long-term solution that is flexible for A1 and A2L refrigerants.
