I’d like one, but stretching down to -20 or even down to -30 is not uncommon in Edmonton, especially if the polar vortex expands more frequently [ucdavis.edu]. I heard they are getting better but I think a spare gas oven is still a good idea.

Basically, I have no problem with heat pumps, I would like to get one and only run my stove at -20. At the very least, I’ll need some form of AC, but I’m not sure the cost of AC alone is justified.

The heat pump can be replaced wherever there is a forced air gas or oil oven. However, they will require electrical work.

Traditionally, no. The house is usually nice in the heat if you keep the curtains closed. But things are changing as we’ve had several brutal heatwaves in the last few years reaching 30+ degrees. In fact, I had to move to my parents’ house (with air conditioning) because it was very hot in mine.

This means they can be frozen in the freezer and applied to the skin and keep for an hour or so. I use them to sleep in the summer as we don’t have AC, much better than a fan. (or use both in extreme heat).
Yes, it would be better if we had a “geothermal heat pump wellbore system” that was much cheaper to operate than SpaceX rockets than “old space” companies.
I researched how much geothermal energy would cost my home and was quoted $100,000. I think it’s a “we don’t want to disturb, go away” quote.

Depends where you live. If the outside temperature is mostly below 0, then the geothermal benefits are enormous. The temperature is stable at 13-14 degrees throughout the year, so it is enough to raise the temperature by about 20-25 degrees to prepare hot water by 35-40 degrees. Also, with geothermal heat, you are also cooling because you are cooling your home in warm ground at 14 degrees (compared to hot ambient air at 35 degrees).
I suspect that when the cost of drilling for water becomes fully commercialized, groundwater heat pumps will become competitive even for small projects. Also use FCU for air conditioning.
The fact that they have to run on AC rather than a pure zero heat load will eventually lead to a rise in the frost line.
A friend from Dallas replaced the resistance heat with a heat pump. He said he calculated an ROI of about 33%. No brains!

Property taxes are local taxes in the state, and some counties levy additional taxes. Without a state property tax, trying to get it through Congress would be impossible.
Clearly. I think the biggest problem is that the rental market (about half of the housing in the US) separates capital investment from operating costs. One landlord I know dismisses ROI as “but I don’t pay the bills” and doesn’t seem to think that a more energy efficient rent justifies a higher rent. They’re probably right because most tenants don’t check utility bills before renting. One idea to fix this discrepancy is to require landlords to publish their average monthly utility bills for the last year.

you are right. But in some parts of the US (Bay area), resistive heating is the only type of heating allowed in new construction. The climate in the bay area is too mild for heat pumps to operate, and the use of natural gas in new buildings is prohibited. We really need some sort of engineering or science committee where politicians have to let go of ideas before they pass to prevent these bad policies. Just ask the contractor (i.e. the person who builds the house) for some environmental regulations.

This attitude is very useless. It just fuels the other side because it’s so extreme it’s fodder for Tucker. Please, STFU. In addition, heat pumps are not available everywhere. They probably work in Dallas and not in the Bay Area and it’s confusing to work in colder regions further north again. They just need a decent heat drop to work anyway. When they are, they are very useful because they are very efficient. When they are not, your attitude tends to increase heat resistance.

This is only partly about the average. If reducing efficiency in the -30 range saves more money than at other times, or worse, if the heat pump can’t actually handle the temperature difference.

Of course, if you have access to a ground source heat pump (i.e. a well about 100 meters deep), then you’re fine. It’s about 12-14 degrees Celsius there, so nothing else is needed.
Some people also use a wood burning fireplace, if only for its “atmosphere”. Doing this a dozen nights during the winter is still better than heating with natural gas all year round.
Geothermal energy was not a practical solution for the existing structure. The same goes for wood-burning fireplaces (also a risk of fire, not to mention air pollution and some heat loss through the chimney).
A hybrid heat pump is an integrated all-in-one unit that runs on electricity until it shuts off and then supplements the rest with gas.
I don’t know who modified you, but neither they nor you seem to understand how cold it is in Montana, let alone Canada.
In the northern US Midwest, -20 C is a common overnight low in January and February. We will have at least one week of -25C overnight lows and hit -30C at least once a year. From time to time we encounter colder temperatures than this.
